We count the calories, carbs and sugars in the pursuit of a healthy body and longevity. It’s time we turn our attention to what goes on our face and this starts with learning to read a label.
Here are the basics on label reading:
- Ingredients are listed in the order of quantity found in a formulation. (Water is most commonly the first ingredient listed in products meaning it is the most highly concentrated.)
- The FDA does not require the listing of any ingredient in quantities less than 2%. (That means if you’re allergic to an ingredient it’s possible, even if it’s not listed that that ingredient could still be found in a product!)
- Top ingredients to avoid:
- Parabens
- Propylene Glycol (PG) and Butylene Glycol
- Phthalate DBP (dibutyl phthalate)
- PVP/VA Copolymer
- Stearalkonium Chloride
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)
- DEA Diethanolamine, MEA Monoethanolamine and TEA Triethanolamine
- Polyethylene Glycol (PEG)
- Triclosan
- DMDM and UREA Imidazolldinyl
- Talc
- Mineral Oil
- Carmine (Cochineal Beetle)
- Bismuth oxychloride
